BEGINNER

Students who have no prior exposure to the target language 

Comprehension
  • The student is becoming familiar with the rhythm and cadence of the new language.
  • The student is able to identify and understand basic vocabulary words such as numbers, colors, weather, days of the week, seasons, etc., and opposites (big/small, hot/cold…).
  • The student is able to identify the gender and number of the noun and use the corresponding article in the new language.
  • The student is able to understand and follow simple instructions.
Expression
  • The student is getting comfortable with the pronunciation of the new language. 
  • The student is able to introduce himself or herself and respond to basic questions in the new language, such as “What’s your name?”, “How old are you?”, “How many/much?”, “What color is…?”.
  • The student is able to use simple basic words in the new language, such as “Hello”, “Goodbye,” “Thank you” and “Excuse me”.
  • The student is able to count up to 10 or 20.
  • The student is able to engage in basic conversations with their teacher and peers (if applicable) and is able to ask and answer simple questions about themselves and their interests.
  • The student is able to learn simple songs about topics they are familiar with as colors, weather, days of the week…
  • The student is able to start reading and writing simple words in the new language (according to their literacy skills).
Grammar
  • The student is able to dominate the basic question and answer structure.
  • The student is able to use simple sentences with the structure Subject + verb + complement in the new language. For example: “I would like a big apple” / “I see a big red apple”. They are also able to formulate basic affirmative and negative sentences.

 

PRE-INTERMEDIATE

Students who can understand basic words and phrases in the target language.

Comprehension
  • The student is able to identify and understand basic vocabulary words such as months of the year, food, clothes, parts of the house, and masters basic vocabulary regarding the days of the week, the seasons, etc.
  • The student is able to understand and use basic prepositions, including prepositions of place, and adjectives to describe people, places, and things using the appropriate gender and number.
Expression
  • The student is able to use sentences with the structure Subject + verb + preposition + complement in the new language. For example, “I put my book on the table”.
  • The student is able to understand and answer questions related to basic personal information in the new language, such as “What is your favorite color?” or “How many siblings do you have?”.
  • The student is able to engage in short conversations and express their thoughts and feelings in the target language.
  • The student is able to start reading and writing simple words in the new language (according to their literacy skills).
Grammar
  • The student is able to understand and use basic verbs and tenses, including the present tense of common verbs in the new language, such as “to have”, “to be”, “to go”, “to see”, “to eat”, “to put”, “to be able to”, “to play”, etc. using pronouns “I”, “you” and “he/she”.
  • The student is able to use possessive pronouns in the first person (my mom, my dad, my school…)
  • The student is able to learn songs about topics they are familiar with.

 

INTERMEDIATE

Students who can communicate simple ideas and understand basic grammar structures in the target language.

Comprehension
  • The student is able to understand and use an expanded range of vocabulary related to common topics and everyday life, such as family, hobbies, and daily routines.
  • The student is able to recognize, in a proficient way, different types of prepositions, including prepositions of place, and adjectives to describe people, objects and places.
  • The student is able to read small texts written in different verb tenses and understand them.
Expression
  • The student is able to answer questions about their preferences and also share more elaborate details. For example, “Blue is my favorite color because it’s the color of the sky,” or “I have two sisters, and we play together in the park.”
  • The student is able to ask question with all the question tags and answer them.
  • The student is able to provide more detailed information about their experiences and emotions.
  • The student is able to construct more complex sentences. For example, “I have a big teddy bear, and it sleeps on my bed.”
Grammar
  • The student is able to conjugate and use present tense of verbs. They are also be able to conjugate and use future tense (all the pronouns).
  • The student is introduced to the past tense and is able to use it in the first, second and third person.
  • The student is able to use all possessive pronouns (my school, your mom, his teacher…)
INTERMEDIATE +

Students who can communicate ideas, understand a complex story (& answer question) and grammar structures in the target language.

Comprehension
  • The student is proficient in understanding and utilizing more intricate vocabulary related to various aspects of everyday life and common topics.
  • The student is able to understand more advanced prepositions, adjectives, and adverbs in texts and conversations that include detailed descriptions of people, places, and things.
  • The student is able to read and listen to interventions that incorporate different grammatical points and verb tenses they have become acquainted with.
Expression
  • The student is able to confidently express themselves using a broader range of words and phrases.
  • The student is able to engage in longer and more intricate conversations with the teacher or their peers (if applicable). They express their opinions and ideas with confidence.
  • The student is able to use more advanced prepositions, adjectives, and adverbs to describe people, places, and things in greater detail. For example, they should be able to say: “The girl has blonde curly hair and is very smart.”
  • The student is able to create and share more extended narratives, effectively communicating experiences and emotions. This includes expressing complex ideas, sharing personal stories, and providing detailed information about a variety of topics.
Grammar
  • The student has an advanced understanding and usage of complex verb tenses and conjugations, including the future tense, past tense, and the conditional tense. The student is also able to use irregular verbs.
  • The student masters possessive pronouns, distinguishing and using them confidently in conversations and texts.
  • The student is able to learn songs about a wide range of topics.
ADVANCED

Students who can communicate complex ideas and understand more advanced grammar structures in the target language.

Comprehension
  • The student is able to use more complex and specific vocabulary across a diverse array of topics such as the universe, the environment, and wildlife. They can articulate their thoughts with precision and depth on these subjects.
  • The student is able to understand texts and conversations that include different verb tenses and conjugations, encompassing present, past, and future tenses, including both regular and irregular verbs, as well as the conditional tense.
Expression
  • The student is capable of using expressions and idioms in the language, adding cultural richness to the language.
  • The student engages in long and complex conversations with the teacher or peers (if applicable), expressing opinions, ideas, and responding thoughtfully to others’ contributions in the target language. Their conversational skills extend to discussing cultural aspects of countries that speak the language.
Grammar
  • The student masters a wide variety of verb tenses and grammatical structures. They demonstrate a sophisticated command of language rules, allowing them to construct coherent and expressive written and spoken content.
  • The student is able to use different grammar points, such as pronouns, conjunctions, and adverbs.
